Photo With Quote: Learning to Fly

“He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance”. ~ Frederick Nietzsche

This is actually a photo of my daughter getting ready for her first day at dance class. This is the best picture I could get. She had a bad case of the “first day” jitters. The dance studio was a place she’d never been before. In fact, she never even set foot in any dance studio for a single lesson. She knew no one in the class or her teacher. And, per the dance studio rules, I was not allowed to stay. (What??!) For a VERY shy 6 year old girl, that’s a pretty big mountain of fear to climb.

My daughter has asked to go to dance lessons since the moment she could speak. Her cousins dance. It’s in her blood. She wants it more than anything. But on this day, she almost gave it up. I could easily have let her.

As adults we’re so quick to dismiss a child’s fears with annoyance and impatience.

“It’ll be fine.”

“I’m too busy for this now.”

“Just go ahead. You’re a big girl.”

“YOU asked to go here”

“I already paid for your lessons!”

If you hang in there and get past all YOUR issues and watch close enough, sometimes you’ll see that even the smallest step outside your child’s comfort zone is one of the biggest acts of courage. It’s really inspirational. But it’s so easy to miss. Don’t miss it. You will have missed something beautiful.

A few weeks ago of my daughter was on stage in front of hundreds of people at our church, dancing her little heart out. She can’t wait to dance again for everyone! I’m so grateful that I didn’t miss the chance to help her do this.

Thankful Thursday: Mid-summer Boredom

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.”

~ Mary Jean Iron

We’ve reached that point at our house during the summer when boredom sets in. Not the rainy day “let’s do something crafty with toilet-paper rolls and duct tape” kind of boredom. It’s the real thing. The constant stream of activity from my revolving front door has slowed to a slow dull whimper. It’s too hot to go outside. My couch, once an indoor trampoline, an island base on a lava-filled floor or a secret fort covered with blankets, now just sags in a mid-summer slump. It too is bored and hot.

I remind myself that even these normal everyday moments, the ones where the kids are bored to tears and fighting with each other over who ate the last Pringle, I will miss. I will miss this. I will miss the whining and complaining. Yes, I will miss it said the crazy lady. Because when they complain to me, that means they think I have a solution to their problem. Someday, they won’t need me to solve their problems. When they whine, they know I can comfort them and help them. Someday they won’t need my help. Today they do. And I’m helping them by letting them be bored. And allowing them to complain about it.

In a world of over scheduled success-oriented children’s activities, the unstructured nature of being bored is the ultimate childhood luxury. Saving my children from summer boredom would rob them of the opportunity to think creatively to solve their own problems, find new interests they never would have pursued otherwise, and to get lost in their own thoughts and dreams. Learning that you have the power to make interesting things happen in your own life, and that boredom is a choice, is a life lesson worth every whining moment.

Thank You Moment

Today, I’m grateful for the unstructured moments of a boring summer day and all the lessons it brings.

Restoring My Perspective

I’m a fan of time lapse videos and Dustin Farrell is one of my favorites.  In his video below, entitled Landscapes – Volume Two, you’ll see incredible pictures of some of the most beautiful places in the world in time lapse format – with clouds swirling and stars streaming by. None of this is animated. It’s all just God’s creation in motion. You cannot watch this and not be in complete awe of all that God has created and the sheer magnitude of His goodness.  I love watching videos like this to get a fresh perspective of our world and a renewed sense of respect and gratitude for this gift of life we have been given.

“…and all of creation sing with me now, lift up your voice and lay your burden down, and all of creation sing with me now, fill up the heavens let His glory resound..”

~ Mercy Me, All Of Creation

Tip: Maximize the screen to get the full effect of the video.  Also, I like to listen to the Mercy Me song, All of Creation, off of their The Generous Mr. Lovewell album while this is playing.
