This is actually a photo of my daughter getting ready for her first day at dance class. This is the best picture I could get. She had a bad case of the “first day” jitters. The dance studio was a place she’d never been before. In fact, she never even set foot in any dance studio for a single lesson. She knew no one in the class or her teacher. And, per the dance studio rules, I was not allowed to stay. (What??!) For a VERY shy 6 year old girl, that’s a pretty big mountain of fear to climb.
My daughter has asked to go to dance lessons since the moment she could speak. Her cousins dance. It’s in her blood. She wants it more than anything. But on this day, she almost gave it up. I could easily have let her.
As adults we’re so quick to dismiss a child’s fears with annoyance and impatience.
“It’ll be fine.”
“I’m too busy for this now.”
“Just go ahead. You’re a big girl.”
“YOU asked to go here”
“I already paid for your lessons!”
If you hang in there and get past all YOUR issues and watch close enough, sometimes you’ll see that even the smallest step outside your child’s comfort zone is one of the biggest acts of courage. It’s really inspirational. But it’s so easy to miss. Don’t miss it. You will have missed something beautiful.
A few weeks ago of my daughter was on stage in front of hundreds of people at our church, dancing her little heart out. She can’t wait to dance again for everyone! I’m so grateful that I didn’t miss the chance to help her do this.
